Dune 45, Namibia

Like a gigantic wave in a vast sea of sand, Dune 45 is one of the world’s highest sand dunes. Awesome, ever-shifting and vulnerable to the whims of the wind, it is the immense sum of its parts – infinite grains of desert sand sculpted by prevailing winds. Soaring heavenwards into an intense blue sky, the gargantuan dune dwarfs a camelthorn tree growing at its base. The number ‘45’, generally thought to represent the distance in kilometres between Sesriem and the dune, is in fact a number assigned to the dune for easy reference on a map.
