The Meeting of two Seas, Skeleton Coast, Namibia

The meeting between sand and sea along Namibia’s desert coastline is abrupt and ruthless. As the Atlantic’s pounding breakers crash into a wall of sand they truncate the golden waves of the dune sea, creating narrow, confined beaches, sometimes less than a metre wide. The excess sand, as well as sand blown into the ocean by blustery winds, is swept northwards by the icy Benguela Current and deposited along the Skeleton Coast. Together, sea and sand create an ever-changing shoreline – which explains why many shipwrecks are found so far inland.
