The interpretation of America’s Statue of Liberty as a beacon of freedom for the world’s oppressed was strengthened by the refugee experience. Most would spend several days in immigration processing on Ellis Island (middle left). Across the water, Lady Liberty beckoned all who entered New York Harbor to the golden promise of America.
