New York might have become a city with no sunlight had zoning laws not been passed to limit the height of new buildings. But what about low constructions, such as churches and theatres, that don’t make use of the space above them? Under real estate laws that may sound lunatic anywhere but in New York, the lower buildings can seell “air rights” to developers of adjacent property, who can then build taller structures than they would normally be allowed to.
