Sea Point
Lion’s Head, with Table Mountain rising over the ridge of Signal Hill, forms an exquisite backdrop to the high-density, cosmopolitan suburb of Sea Point. Its famous promenade curves along the coastline where waves tumble over angular sedimentary rock, their contorted shapes jutting skyward. At the southernmost end of the promenade is the Sea Point Contact – a remarkable geological zone where, 650 million years ago, molten granite magma penetrated the near-black rocks of Malmesbury shale. The occurrence, usually found 10 km below the surface, was first recorded by Clark Abel in 1818, and the site was visited by Charles Darwin in 1836.
