Lion Cubs, South Africa

Life for a young lion cub is precarious – only one in five may survive to the age of two. Lionesses of the same pride often give birth around the same time, each helping to raise, defend and suckle the others’ young. This promotes survival since cubs can turn to any of the lionesses in their pride for food, grooming, protection or play.
